Haven values Creativity

What is creativity?

It is often thought that creativity is making something but the meaning of creativity means ‘To grow’ (tspct.org)

Creativity includes many things, it encompasses ideas, possibility thinking, problem solving, entertainment, communication, culture, finding new ways to do things, combining things…you can be creative in maths, science, music, dance, cooking, teaching, engineering, as well as painting, sculpting, singing, bringing up a family…

Why do we value Creativity?

Art & creativity;
  • helps children to understand themselves & the world around them.
  • Provides a safe way to explore & express feelings & ideas in manageable ways that perhaps cannot yet be expressed in words.
  • It’s a great leveller, children have a space & time in which to create regardless of ability, age, race or language for example.
  • It’s an open ended opportunity to make choices & reach conclusions to one’s own satisfaction.
  • It leads to flexible thinking as children explore different ideas, materials, techniques & combinations.
  • It builds confidence & we all perform better when we are in touch with what inspires us..
  • It helps children to reach their potential & beyond in all areas of learning.
These are the reasons that The Haven is passionate about creativity because it is good for children, as creativity is the foundation for fulfilment & future success. It is also good for civilisation as without creativity we could not overcome challenges & develop innovative solutions. Creativity is a form of future proofing!

How do we nurture & teach creativity?
We support children by giving wings to their imagination without fear of failure as described by Sir Ken Robinson.

We aspire to “Awaken joy in creative expression & knowledge” as stated by Albert Einstein.
We are all capable of being & doing anything, this self-belief is one of our core values, all ideas & opinions are valued here.

We open ourselves & the children up to new experiences – We invite creative people to share their creativity with us.

We welcome children’s exploration & experimentation…connections can be made between unlikely things! Often practitioners find themselves thinking “I wish I’d thought of that”

We share children’s ideas & processes with them, reflecting on what worked well. The process is displayed & valued, as much as products such as paintings & models.

We provide inspiration in the form of people, places & things. We have an Artist in Residence every term. The forest & nature are valued here too & children have rich opportunities to experience the natural world & use their senses.

“The principle goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done, men who are creative, inventors & discoverers” – Jean Piaget.

Our current project: Shapes and cubism - Piet Mondrian

Our current focus is on shapes and cubism, focusing on the work of Piet Mondrian.

The children have been using shapes and the projector to create displays on the wall.
